The Boy At the Back of the Class

  • There used to be an empty chair at the back of my class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it.He’s nine years old (just like me), but he’s very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn’t like sweets – not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite! But then I learned the truth: Ahmet really isn’t very strange at all. He’s a refugee who’s run away from a War. A real one. With bombs and fires and bullies that hurt people. And the more I find out about him, the more I want to help.

This book was really good to start with but then focused too much on the plan to get Ahmet's parents back and this is made it a bit boring in parts because it was too repetitive. It is important because it's happening now and we learn about refugees and that part of the book was interesting and moving.

This book made me feel Sad, Scared, Moved

This book is told from the point of view of a child who makes friends with a young boy who is a refugee from Syria. It is a good introduction to children about issues such as refugees, war, tolerance and friendship. I found it a heart-warming, funny, sensitive and positive book and would highly recommend it.
